What is an Advanced Electronic Signature (AES)?
An Advanced Electronic Signature (AES) is a secure way to sign documents online that verifies the identity of the signatory. It is fully compliant with the EU eIDAS regulation and recognized across the entire European Union.
What documents can you sign with an Advanced E-signature?
An advanced e-signature is ideal for documents that do not require a written form under pain of nullity. These include:
- Mandate contracts and contracts for specific work that do not include intellectual property transfer clauses
- Cooperation agreements
- Contracts for the sale of movable property
- Exchange agreements
- Lease and tenancy agreements for up to one year
- And many others that do not require a written form under pain of nullity
Note: If your document strictly requires a written form under pain of nullity (e.g., an employment contract), you must use a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES).
Why is an Advanced E-signature secure?
An advanced e-signature meets 4 key security requirements:
- Uniqueness: It is uniquely linked to a specific person.
- Identification: It allows the signatory to be clearly identified.
- Sole control: You apply it using data that only you control.
- Integrity: It is permanently linked to the document. Any subsequent change to the content will be immediately detected.
Good to know: An advanced e-signature corresponds to the legal documentary form. It differs from a standard e-signature because it requires additional identity verification. However, it is not equivalent to a handwritten signature (that is what a Qualified Electronic Signature - QES is for).
